Mohabbat Hayat Hoti Hay is a novel based on cousin love. It tells the story of the Shah family, who suffered the loss of four family members within a year, leaving behind their children. Nabeel, the youngest son, marries Khadija to support the family and care for his late brothers’ children. After a year of marriage, Nabeel and Khadija have a daughter named Dil Ayenoor Shah.
The other main characters, Sikandar Shah and Shajia Shah, are Ayenoor’s cousins. Ayenoor grows attached to Sikandar from childhood, while Sikandar and Shajia fall in love. Sikandar treats Ayenoor as a child because he is 13 years older than her, while he and Shajia are of the same age. However, Ayenoor envies Shajia, believing that she always received more love and attention, first from her mother and now from Sikandar.
When Shajia and Sikandar’s marriage is arranged, Ayenoor creates a scene and demands that Sikandar marry her instead. This shocks Sikandar and the rest of the family, but no immediate action is taken. Feeling humiliated, Ayenoor leaves Pakistan and moves to New York to pursue her studies.
