Self Obsession is a novel about Haya and Rahban, the main characters. Rahban sees Haya somewhere and instantly falls in love with her. He sends a marriage proposal, which her family accepts because he comes from a respectable background. Haya, a simple and traditional girl, agrees to the marriage as her parents approve of it.
Rahban is a good person but is highly self-obsessed. He is also deeply possessive of Haya and expects her to always look presentable, regardless of how she feels. Although Haya is generally happy with him, she keeps some feelings hidden in her heart.
The novel also explores family issues, especially involving Rahban’s mother. Sometimes, she treats Haya kindly, but at other times, she behaves like a strict and difficult mother-in-law. Other characters, such as Haya’s younger brother and his wife, also play a role in the story.
At its core, the novel highlights the struggles of married life, showing how some husbands, like Rahban, treat their wives more like possessions than life partners. He even gets upset when Haya replies late to his messages.
