Basaat is the story of the Khan family, who are the feudal lords (Sardars) in Swat. The novel highlights their harsh customs, such as prohibiting girls from marrying outside the family. If no suitable match is available within the family, they force multiple girls to marry the same man to preserve their property. However, amidst these unjust traditions, some individuals rise to fight for justice.
One such person is Dariyan Abbas Khan, who returns from abroad after completing his higher studies. As the next in line to lead the family, no one knows that he intends to change these customs. He falls in love with Dedam, his cousin. However, Dedam’s father married outside the family, which caused the current family head, De Jan, to despise her. As a result, Dedam has always faced mistreatment and is treated like a servant.
Other important characters include Behram and Gul Bahar. Behram was originally married to Gul Bahar’s elder sister, but after she tragically passed away during childbirth, the family head forced him to marry Gul Bahar.
Another storyline follows Zark, a feudal lord and the head of his family. He accidentally meets Darkhani, a girl escaping from a feudal household where she was given away as wani (a forced marriage custom). While on the run, she encounters Zark, who decides to protect her.
The novel explores themes of love, justice, and the fight against oppressive traditions within a powerful feudal system.
