This story revolves around Romaisa, a young woman who goes for a job interview and meets Nabeel, a kind businessman. Romaisa lost her parents at a young age and was raised by her aunt, who is greedy and doesn’t treat her well. Despite having some property from her parents, her aunt doesn’t give her any money and insists that Romaisa find a job to support herself. In hopes of earning her aunt’s favor, Romaisa searches for work.
At the office, she meets Nabeel Sikandar, and they fall in love and eventually get married. However, when Romaisa moves into Nabeel’s home, his mother treats her like a servant because of her background. When Nabeel learns about this, he asks his father for a separate house. His father advises him to be patient, but during a business trip to Sheikhupura, Nabeel tragically dies in an accident.
After Nabeel’s death, his mother sends Romaisa back to her aunt’s house. However, Nabeel’s father, Sikandar, finds out and quickly brings her back to live with him. At that time, Romaisa is pregnant, and she later gives birth to a baby girl named Maham.
Sikandar Ali, Romaisa’s father-in-law, suggests that his other son, Zesshan (Nabeel’s brother), marry Romaisa, but Zesshan is already married. Sikandar Ali wants to ensure a secure future for Romaisa and Maham.
This story highlights Romaisa’s struggle to survive in difficult circumstances, with no resources and no family to support her. Umera Ahmed beautifully portrays the challenges faced by women in society. The novel was first published in Khawateen Digest and later became a book due to its popularity.
