Mushaf by Nimra Ahmed is a compelling story about Mehmal, a young girl who lives in a joint family house with her father’s brothers after her father’s death. Despite being the rightful owners of the house and the family business, Mehmal and her mother, Musarat, are treated like servants. Her uncles took control of the business, leaving them to live a life of hardship while the rest of the family enjoyed wealth and luxury.

Mehmal dreams of being rich and wearing new dresses daily, just like her cousins. This longing leads her into the trap of her cousin, Fawad, who deceives her by pretending to love her. In reality, he exploits her, sending her to a government official as a bribe to clear his project file. However, instead of falling victim, Mehmal encounters Hamayun Dawood, an ASP in the police, who had set up the meeting as part of a sting operation to expose Fawad.

Through this ordeal, Mehmal meets Farishtey, Hamayun’s cousin, who runs a madrasa (institute) where she teaches the Quran. This marks the beginning of Mehmal’s spiritual journey. The story beautifully portrays Mehmal’s return to the teachings of the Quran and how she finds guidance and peace in its verses. She learns that the Quran, revealed centuries ago, contains timeless wisdom on how to navigate life’s challenges and conflicts.
